What is Mastication?
Mastication is a mechanical fuel reduction technique that uses specialized equipment to grind or shred vegetation, reducing wildfire risk by removing hazardous fuels.
Event Purpose:
This mastication demonstration aims to educate community members, landowners, fire professionals, and local decision-makers about the role of mastication in hazardous fuels reduction and wildfire risk mitigation. By showcasing mastication equipment in action, the event provides a hands-on opportunity to:
- Understand how mastication works as a mechanical treatment method
- Learn when and where mastication is appropriate
- Explore its benefits and limitations in comparison to other fuels reduction techniques
- Connect with fire professionals and land managers to discuss how mastication fits into broader wildfire resilience strategies
